When they give a car to someone for a b-day present, they can’t really wrap up the car, so they wrap up the keys. Surprise!!! Keys=Car!!!

I have never heard of the practice of giving keys for one’s 21st birthday. Where do you live, and who are your people?

Maybe the keys stand for independence, as if to say, "You are now old enough to make your own decisions and make your own life, so I give you the keys to unlock whatever doors you wish." Or, "I’ve given you the keys to your life: education, values, a good upbringing. Now it’s up to you to go and make your life."

Do the keys open anything? We usually got the keys to our house around 13 or 14. As for car keys, I never got a car for my birthday and I don’t think my brother or sisters did either. (We live in NYC with its subway and bus systems.) My sister did give my niece an old car for graduation, but the girl was going upstate to college.
